Salads. What’s the first thought that comes to your mind when you hear this word? For me, its “ghaas-phoos”. Even as a vegetarian, salads aren’t really taken too seriously. Probably because its always remained on the sidelines of lunch or dinner.
Salad Grills is Pune’s first restaurant that’s hero-ing the humble salad. A well-prepared salad can constitute a whole meal that’s light on the stomach yet heavy on the nutrients.
After launching operations in Pune in a delivery kitchen model, Salad Grills have recently opened their first dine-in outlet at Karve Road. Although it is a limited seating outlet, its done up beautifully. I got a chance to visit the place upon visit a couple of weeks ago and here is a rundown of my experience.
The Cream of Asparagus Soup was a good start to the meal. However since the asparagus itself is salty, the added salt to the soup ended up making it a tad oversalty. The Thai Chicken Soup was a lovely combination of sweet, tangy and spicy flavors and had ample quantity of chicken.

The Italian Chicken Salad was bright and colorful, with fresh veggies, and creamy Italian dressing. Loved the sprinkling of flax seeds for the added crunch. The Asian Chicken Noodle Salad was loaded with veggies and slivers of apple, and drizzled with Asian ginger vinaigrette. Loved the softness of the noodles against the crunch of the veggies. Addition of black sesame was a good touch.

Apple Iced Tea was a new flavor I tried. Loved the apple flavor which complemented the taste of the tea well. The fact that it was low on sugar ensured the flavors stood out.

The Cheese Mushroom Garlic Bread was soft and cheesy with a lovely earthy taste of the mushrooms. Just couldn’t stop eating this one. A perfect side for your iced tea.

The Grilled Chicken Salad with blue cheese and orange balsamic dressing was a new attempt by the folks at Salad Grills. Unfortunately the tangy and acidic flavor of orange balsamic dressing and pungency of the blue cheese conflicted majorly. Wouldn’t recommend it in its current avatar. Personal recommendation – use smaller chunks of the cheese to ensure less acidic flavor in each bite and replace the dressing.

The Grilled Chicken Salad with Soba noodles was a Japanese style salad with teriyaki grilled chicken. Absolutely amazing salad, it was an explosion of flavors in the mouth.

The New York Styled Chicken over Rice had the rice cooked in chicken stock with white and hot sauce. The tangy rice goes well with the creamy white sauce and the spicy hot sauce. Loved the cilantro rub on the chicken which added another layer of texture and flavor to the dish.
