A Gateway to Craft Beers

Gateway Brewing Company was founded in 2011 with a single purpose: to brew classic styles of beer with local ingredients and make them available to bars & restaurants at an affordable price. The name is inspired from Mumbai’s local landmark – Gateway of India and is a true-blue “Made in India” company.

Gateway Brewing Co, is Mumbai’s finest craft beer experience, pouring at over 75+ restaurants and bars in Mumbai and Pune.

Gateway Brewing recently hosted a bloggers table at Elephant & Co., Kalyani Nagar to showcase their beers as well as pairing with select ECO dishes.

Now that’s some personal attention!

In Gateway ‘s line-up of craft brews, this delicious cider – SideCar – finds its way in by cleverly attaching itself, like a sidecar, to become your companion for the goings-on of the night. Yellow in color, this lightly carbonated cider showcases the sweetness and mildly tart notes of Lal Ambri apples from Kashmir. Superbly satisfying and deceptively easy to drink.

The White Zen is a word play on how this beer is pronounced in Germany – Hefeweizen “hay-fuh-veyt-szenn”. This German inheritance is one which shouldn’t be meddled with. Like Zen, it involves dropping all illusions and seeing things without distortion. Having been brewed to style, bearing hints of clove and banana which makes for an enjoyable and easy beer to drink, this wheat beer only re-establishes the fact that if enlightenment was ever served on tap, it would taste like this.

The Doppelganger beer, inspired from a classic German Dunkelweizen, is strangely familiar to its predecessor, White Zen, with spice and fruit on its nose. But its dark appearance, malty character and luscious mouth-feel, brought about by their proprietary dark wheat malt, take your palate in a completely different direction.

Four different hops from the US find their way into Gateway ‘s Four Hop IPA – Cascade, Citra, Mosaic, Amarillo. Each hop is unique yet, when combined, will create new aroma & flavor. You can expect raw mango, pineapple, peach & citrus characters from these hops in a ‘equal to more than the sum of its parts’ kind of way. Light gold in color, unfiltered to retain the ‘dry hopped’ character, this aroma-and-flavor-not-defined IPA will surely intrigue you.

We started off the tasting with samplers of all 4 of their beers, where we were encouraged to use all of our senses to understand the beers and not just gulp it down. The White Zen and Hop IPA were expectedly pale yellow while the SideCar had a champagne yellow bubbly appearance. The Doppelganger sported a dark, caramel-y red tinge.

Cheers to beers!!

The Chili and Scallion Baby Corn with Broccoli and Water Chestnut was served in a crisp, refined flour bowl with just the perfect amount of sauce, just enough to coat the veggies but not drip over. The mild spiciness of the dish and the crunch of the broccoli and water chestnut were a perfect complement to the slight bitterness of Gateway ‘s Hop IPA.

The Steamed Fish was served in a pool of light soy sauce and garnished with julienne of bell peppers. The melt-in-the-mouth fish with a hint of sweetness from the soy sauce goes wonderfully well with the malty flavors of the dark Doppelganger.
